Why is it always assumed in articles that people are out to get drunk, get pregnant and commit crimes? Many of us just want to enjoy our drink (wine for me) and relax and socialize. People and useless government saying all alcohol is bad are clueless. I know many people well into their late 80s and early 90s who drink with lunch and dinner everyday of the week. Why aren’t there more articles about Sardegna for example? One of the areas in the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives, oh and they drink wine (Cannonau to be specific)

Thanks for the comment! I don't think most writers assume that — this article is about young people and how their behaviour compares to that of the past, and in the past this group really did drink to test boundaries.

"Decreasing ILLEGAL drug use". Well, some would argue Legal drug use is up. Someone who used to take a swig of dad's vodka before school now takes one of his (or mom's) gummies before going to school; or don't drink because it interacts badly with their prescription.

That could be true in the US, but not elsewhere, because in most of the countries studied, cannabis products are still illegal, and ADHD medications are prescribed with extreme caution.

...and tricky to get a diagnosis even if one is required.

I wonder if there is something about young people living their lives more consciously rather than compensating for shyness/boredom/anxiety/depression etc with their choice of oblivion; they may be trying to deal with issues in other ways.

Like everything though, I suspect its not one single capital letter idea, but a broad range of interlinked factors that have become part of culture.

I'm going to post Part II today; yes, there are multiple causes. What's really interesting is that other sections of the population are also becoming more risk averse, which is a consequence of Covid.
